Aquasoil Cycling

Ammonia release from fresh aquasoil and the water-change schedule that follows it.

Purpose

To record what fresh aquasoil actually does over its first weeks on this tank, measured rather than assumed, and to show how the water-change schedule was derived from those measurements.

Background

Active aquasoil releases ammonia for a period after setup and pulls carbonate hardness down. Both are expected and neither is a fault. The usual advice is heavy, frequent water changes for the first weeks, tapering once ammonia reads zero. But 'the first weeks' varies, so the decline is worth measuring rather than following a calendar.

Methodology

  1. Hand-test ammonia on a repeating schedule from setup onward.
  2. Log every water change against the ammonia record so the two can be read together.
  3. Track dissolved solids continuously, so each change shows as a step and the creep between changes is visible.
  4. Taper the change cadence only after consecutive zero readings, not after a fixed number of days.

Observations

  • Ammonia peaked several days after setup rather than immediately.
  • The decline was monotonic once it began, halving roughly every few tests.
  • Consecutive zero readings, not elapsed time, are what made tapering safe to consider.
