Question

How is usable light actually distributed across a 90P under a single pendant fixture?

Background

The tank is 90 cm long and lit by one pendant fixture that is considerably narrower. Plant placement had been decided by eye. Before spending anything on a different light, it was worth establishing what the current one actually delivers at each plant.

Hypothesis

Light would fall off toward the ends, but the working assumption was that the fixture was simply underpowered for the tank.

Recorded before measuring, so it can be shown to have been wrong.

Equipment

Method

An Apogee MQ-510 underwater quantum sensor was held level at each of twenty repeatable positions corresponding to plant groups, mid-photoperiod, with the aquarium light at full output and room lighting minimized.

Measurements

  • PPFD in µmol/m²/s at twenty repeatable locations
  • Fixture height known for the survey as a whole
  • Complete per-position depth was not preserved for this survey

Observations

  • Measured PPFD varied widely across the layout rather than tracking a single headline number.
  • The center positions read substantially higher than the outer positions.
  • The back wall read higher than the midground, which led to finding the fixture was off-center front-to-back.

Result and conclusion

Distribution, rather than output, appears to be what limits this layout. Center readings sat inside the working range used for demanding red plants while the end positions fell well short of it.

A single measurement under the middle of a fixture does not describe what plants at the ends receive. The original premise, that the fixture was too weak, was not supported by the readings. Coverage appears to be the constraint with the current fixture. Mounting height was the first no-cost adjustment tested. Per-position measurement is now the basis for evaluating the layout.

Future work

  • Re-measure after any change to fixture position or height.
  • Add canopy-height measurements as the stems fill in.
  • Depth and fixture height are now recorded as mandatory metadata on every new survey, so a future survey can be compared against this one on those terms.
  • Measure the same positions with the ADA Shade removed and refitted. ADA quotes up to approximately 15% more downward illuminance for it, but that is a lux figure from the manufacturer; the shade's actual contribution in PPFD at each position on this tank has never been measured, and it is a one-session test.
